Monthly Archives: April 2009

I received the April newsletter from Class Comics and was delighted to see a trailer for book #1. I am a huge fan of Class Comics and love that “genre” of art.

Pooh planned the most awesome birthday for me this year. He woke me up with a kiss and presented me with a gift. I was quite surprised because Pooh had already gotten me a guitar for my birthday (which I haven’t blogged about yet…so well, now you know!).

He got me these shoes that I fell in love with at Nordstroms.

Pooh gave me an early birthday present. He knew I was wanting a guitar really bad. He was also worried I’d end up buying it myself because he saw me looking at guitars online a couple times. He got me a Black Huntington Acoustic Electric Guitar. I love it! I don’t know how to play, but I’m definitely learning!

Pooh took me out for a birthday breakfast at Richard Walker’s Pancake House. We’ve always seen their advertisements in 944, San Diego Magazine, and San Diego Food & Wine but have never stopped by because the line was always huge! My birthday being on a Monday was definitely a plus since it wasn’t busy. The prices were pretty cheap and the servings were large. It was extremely hot out so we enjoyed our breakfast in the outdoor patio. It was delicious! Pooh had 3 pancakes, eggs, and sausages. I had Chocolate Chip Flap Jacks. MMMMMMM!

After breakfast Pooh took me shopping. Wuhoo! I ended up not getting myself anything. :) I’m very much happy with what I have and what Pooh got me. We did, however, randomly decided to get ourselves an airconditioner for our apartment. The past couple of days were extremely hot and our apartment is like an oven. As much as I like to walk around in my underwear at home…and well, sometimes naked…it still doesn’t make the heat go away. We got a nice small energy efficient window unit for our bedroom. Pooh and I spent most of the day enjoying the AC….which led to my next birthday gift. Nothing beats birthday sex. :)

For dinner Pooh took me to the most amazing restaurant. Pooh didn’t tell me where we were having dinner at first. He told me to get dressed up real nice because he was taking me somewhere special. He drove us around downtown a bit and then parked in a Jack n’ the Box parking lot and said “We’re here!”. I chuckled a bit and he replied, “No really…we’re going here for dinner.” He had me going for a bit but then he got the car started and headed to where we were really going to eat. Pooh took me to The Oceanaire Seafood Room in downtown. It was incredible! Unfortunately, I don’t have any pictures. It was much too dark for my cellphone to take a decent picture (crappy G1 camera!…I knew I shoulda brought my K800i). Anyway, it was by far the best dining experience I’ve ever had. The service was 5 stars all the way. Everything from the hostess, to the wait staff, to the ambiance, to the food…everything was perfect! Well, almost everything. Pooh was a bit set back because his reservations were for 2 with booth seating but they placed us at a table. With that set aside everything else was great.

The crabcakes were highly recommended so we each ordered a crab cake for our appetizers to start. We had each had a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and toasted to my birthday. We also had a couple oyster shooters from the oyster bar. Pooh had never tried oysters before so I made him try ’em. He enjoyed them but still thought it was “weird”. For our main course Pooh had the Blue Crab crusted Baja Yellowtail Jack “Kid Dynamite”. I had the Proscuitto and Basil wrapped Tahitian Tombo Tuna (I ordered it medium rare but I think next time I’ll be adventurous and have it rare). The food was delicious! To top it off, our waiter came out with a Baked Alaska for dessert (which was on the house since it was my birthday!). The amazing part was he lit the contents of a gravy dish on fire, held it 2 feet in the air and slowly poured a smooth stream of flames onto the meringue. Just when I thought it was over, he sprinkled cinnamon onto the flaming meringue which made a great display of sparks. It was definitely an incredible and spectacular sight! Not only was it pretty, it was scrumptious!

It was a great all day birthday celebration with Pooh. Although I couldn’t capture all of the great moments with my camera, I’ll always cherish them in memory. Cheers to being one year older! :)

Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone! I had an awesome birthday this year and can’t wait till I can share my day with you all. I’ll be posting about it soon. :)

Pooh made some desert the other night. It was sweet and tasty!

1 Plantain (Large thin slices)
Brown Sugar (as little or as much as you like)
Olive Oil

Heat a thin layer of olive oil on a flat nonstick pan. Pooh doesn’t like using too much oil on our food so we usually use Pam Cooking Spray to lightly oil the pan. Sprinkle brown sugar on both sides of the plantain slices and then place them in the pan. Be sure not to use too much oil or it’ll splatter all over the place! Once the plantains turn to a golden brown color and when there’s a nice layer of caramelization, they’re ready to remove from the pan. Let them cool a bit and enjoy! Best served warm. I prefer thin crispy slices. Pooh prefers large soft slices. This is one of my favorite treats growing up in a filipino home. I hope you try this out sometime. Let me know how it goes!

Pooh and I recently discovered an awesome sushi place called RK Cafe Sushi. The menu is nicely organized by price ranging from $3 sushi rolls to $8 specialty sushi rolls. The food is excellent and cheap! The restaurant features Korean as well as Japanese cuisine but Pooh and I only tried the sushi. Friends of ours have raved about the sushi but I haven’t heard much about the rest of the food. Comparing the place with other sushi joints in the area, RK seems to be the best for the price. I highly recommend trying the $8 Trust Me Roll…it’s amazing!

So last week I had to go to the DMV to renew my registration (Monday). Yes, I could have just renewed it online but I lost the letter from the DMV with the renewal code on it. Anyway, after about an hour of waiting for my number to be called I was able to pay for my registration. I thought I’d be able to just walk out with my new registration and sticker but the teller said that I could not receive my new registration until after I’ve provided a certificate showing that my vehicle passes a smog check. It would of been nice if they had put that on the letter that they sent me to renew my registration…but they didn’t, even though they normally do. He also said that my registration was currently suspended because they needed proof of insurance sent to them. Which I had sent to them the month before…3 times! Two times via fax, and another time through my insurance who then faxed to the DMV. So I left a bit frustrated by the situation.

That same day I faxed over my insurance information from work to the DMV from and had that bit taken care of. The fax came back so I called to verify that I had the right number. They said it was the right number but their lines are just busy so she gave me another number. I faxed 5 times just to make sure they received it. Guess what? Our fax machine printed 5 notices saying that the fax were not received. So I called the DMV who then said that I can send it via email. So I personally sent it via email and also contacted my insurance company to have them send it via fax and via email. Bleh.

Since I work Tuesdays through Saturdays, I had to wait until the next Monday to get my smog checked. Which also happens to be my only time I can get to the DMV while it’s open. So I got my smog checked on monday, received the certificate, and headed to the DMV. Huge line. Ugh. Finally I get called and I present my proof that my vehicle passed the smog test and they verified that my registration was no longer suspended. Just when I thought I’d be able to walk out with my registration…the teller says that I have an unpaid parking ticket that needs to be taken care of before I am able to renew my registration. The words “WHAT THE FUCK?!” reverberated in my mind. I had a parking ticket earlier in the year because Pooh had forgot to turn the wheels towards the curb when we parked on hill. We paid the ticket 2 weeks after receiving it and the funds were removed from our checking…so it shouldn’t still show in the system that I had a parking ticket. In order for me to remove the hold because of the ticket and finally renew my registration…I had to verify that I paid for my parking ticket and then come back to receive my registration. So I left without my registration even more frustrated than last time I left the DMV. It was much too late for me to come back and wait in line for another hour since I had other things to do so my registration would have to wait until next monday…this coming monday. I had the mess with the parking ticket taken care of. I am hoping the next time I go to the DMV to finally get my registration that I don’t get another surprise. Ugh…I very much dislike the DMV.

Pooh and I were going to have some drinks and Gordo Burgers at The Hole today but the line was HUGE! We ended up cruisin on over to Mo’s to grab some drinks and burgers instead. Pooh and I shared a Garlic & Onion Rings Veggie Burger with a side of fries. I also had a Red Stripe to help wash down the grub and Pooh ordered a Kick Ass Margarita. The veggie burgers at Mo’s are always delicious and it was definitely a nice day for burgers, fries, and cold alcoholic beverages!
