SUNDAY NIGHT

Pooh and I had a free night at the Spa Resort & Casino in Palm Springs so we thought we’d use it before our schedule got crazy (because of the holidays). We drove up Sunday, checked in, and just had ourselves a great night! I was surprised by how nice our room was. I honestly thought there would be floral bed sheets and old style furnishing. It was a bit like the Vdara but not as fancy; we were still very pleased. :). Since we were only staying for one night we made the best use of our “alone time” in the room…twice – once before going out and another returning after our night out on the town. We played a bit at the casino and then went to Hunter’s for some drinks. Afterwards we thought we’d check out the happy hour at Wang’s. We heard many good things about the place. It was a great happy hour – $2 wells, $4 martinis, happy hour priced apps, and a cutie bartender that poured us heavy drinks! What a great time we had at Wang’s! :) There was also an amazing singer that was performing in the outside patio area. She serenaded us for a bit! After a couple cocktails and some appetisers we thought we’d try out another place and have dinner. Thanks to Yelp, we found a great place called MatchBox! We had ourselves some more cocktails, a Crunchy Tuna Roll, Sliders, Seared Scallops, and a delicious pizza w/ no cheese! Dinner was delicious and so much fun! We chatted with an older couple that was seated next to us for quite a while. They were such cute couple and so much in love. They recommended us some places check out and we recommended them places as well. I’m excited to check these places out…some places you’d never think of going unless someone tells you about how awesome it is. After our lovely dinner we headed back to our hotel room. It was such a great night. It felt as though a couple days had passed but it was all squeezed into this one random Sunday. The awesome thing about this crazy weekend was that we’re off on Monday’s so we were able to enjoy our Monday as well! We checked out of our hotel Monday and headed back to SD…but not without going to Morongo casino along the way to play some games and enjoy ourselves a buffet for lunch! We sure did spoil ourselves this weekend!

Pooh and I went to Guppy House with our friends this weekend. It was our first time there and it was fucking amazing! Brick toast, shaved ice w/ condensed milk and strawberries, popcorn chicken, and spicy noodles! None of these things went together at all but they still tasted amazing!

AKINORI – HILLCREST

Pooh and I went to a new spot in Hillcrest called Akinori. The service was friendly and the sushi was pretty delicious. We got the Cajun Albacore, the Pizza roll, and the Kill Bill. I loved the first two but the Kill Bill had slices of lime on top that left a bitter after taste; the rinds were cut too thick I guess. It was yummy when I took the limes off so I wouldn’t say it was bad. The Nigiri was a bit pricy but I’m curious to try them next time to see if they’re amazing or made of unicorns. They just opened recently so I’m sure they’ll make a lot of improvements after a while. I’m excited to try eating there again soon…especially since they’re only a block away from my apartment. :)

MINI DATE DAY

Pooh and I went to La Jolla to check out a new spot called Bardot Bars. Gourmet Ice Cream Bars…yum! (Cupcakes were so yesterday lol) I was just going to get Pooh one and have a taste since I’m lactose intolerant, but the worker said that her boss has a sensitivity to dairy and is able to eat them just fine. (Something about the dairy they use I guess?) Since they looked so delicious, I took her word for it and tried one. I forget what mine was called but it was the smores bar. Pooh got a strawberry cheesecake bar called the New York, New York. They were delicious! The storefront is pretty cute. Pooh said it looked like a Sephora that sold ice cream bars. The lady working was very nice and was right about the dairy. They are a bit pricy at 5 bucks a bar, but if you can spend 5 bucks on a frapp or on a fancy cupcake then it doesn’t really matter – especially if it tastes good. I think they’re yummy and can’t wait to try another! Pooh and I took our tasty treats out to watch the sun set. It was so romantic! :)

BOILING CRAB IN SAN DIEGO

image

Pooh and I went to Boiling Crab in SD. This one’s located in Mira Mesa. It’s a bit of a drive for us and I hate the traffic on Mira Mesa Blvd, but we thought we’d give it a try. The service was pretty friendly. Pooh and I love spicy food so we ordered our Shrimp with THE WHOLE SHABANG at XXX and a side of rice.

Crab Hut vs Boiling Crab? I loved that Boiling Crab’s shrimp were bigger and better quality, but the XXX sauce wasn’t quite as spicy as I’d like it. It was delicious, but not very spicy. I actually prefer Crab Hut’s sauce mainly because it’s spicier. I would love to have Boiling Crab’s shrimp in Crab Hut’s sauce. Mmmmm yum!!! I also like that Boiling Crab gives limes with their salt n pepper; Crab Hut gives lemons. The only thing that would make me prefer one over the other would be the ridiculous wait time for Boiling Crab, and they run out by the time your 2 hour wait is over. I think they are both delicious in their own way and I’d still go to both. It’s nice to actually have options in sd. “BOILING CRAB has a wait time of 2 hours, ok let’s go to Crab Hut on Convoy…oh wait it’s packed. Ok let’s go to Crab Hut in downtown.”

Which do you prefer?

AZUKI SUSHI

Pooh and I decided to try a new place to eat for dinner tonight. We went to Azuki Sushi and I am very happy we did! They had a nice selection of sushi and specials, each unique and intriguing. I wanted to try them all! I really liked the flavors in each of the rolls we had. The sauces weren’t overpowering and complimented the natural fresh flavors of the fish. I highly recommend checking this place out! The “Are You Kidding Me?!” Roll is definitely a must try! The fried onions atop a bed of dressed greens made this dish my favorite. Not only was the salad amazing, so was the sushi!

image

The “On The Border” Roll was delicious! I loved that there was a bit of spicy and bold flavors yet the fish was able to shine.

The Bonsai roll was interesting, in a good way. It was sweet yet savory and the crunchy toppings gave it that little extra something.

DEL MAR FAIR

Pooh and I went to Del Mar Fair before 4th of July. I thought I’d share some pics! Last year I really wanted to try the deep fried goodies – deep fried Oreos, deep fried butter, deep fried stickers, etc. This year all I wanted was a turkey leg. To my surprise, they had bacon wrapped turkey legs. YES, BACON WRAPPED TURKEY LEGS. It was pretty awesome. Though, I actually didn’t care much for the bacon. What made it so amazing was that the bacon sealed in all the flavor and juices…so the turkey was so flavorful and tender. It was absolutely delicious! We rode some rides and had some cocktails…and ate n ate n ate! I can’t wait till next year’s fair. :)
